In a small town in the northern region of Japan, there is an expert crafter who takes old stones and turns them into beautiful works of art. Though her name Akie Nakata, she is widely known for her nature-inspired sculptures. She turns found stones into lifelike animal sculptures. Nakata has been collecting stones since she was a child and has always been interested in art. After studying oil painting in university, she started painting on small pebbles and stones, but the project gradually grew larger until she began sculpting on larger rocks.

The stone animals look like they could come alive at any moment and are so realistic that you can even see the hair on their fur. Further, you will not believe that they have been carved with just basic tools. She uses combination of acrylic paints, markers and colored pencils. Tigers, cats, dogs, owls, penguins and even to hedgehogs, she has an impressive repertoire of animal art. However, it’s her pet portraits that really capture the attention of her audience and for good reason. It is amazing that something so simple can be made into something so breathtakingly detailed.
