Artist Iantha Naicker’s creativity goes beyond the ordinary paintings coloured on a canvas. Instead of colours, she skillfully employs ants. These paintings are called animal paintings. Although creating these paintings is a well-planned process, it seems like ants are working together with the artist to create these magical patterns by themselves.
Sprinkling sugar is the trick Naicker uses to gather hundreds of ants in one place. She sprinkles a small amount of sugar on the shape she designed beforehand. That’s how she gathers ants in a way that creates wonderful animal paintings. Once ants come together to taste their precise meal, Naicker is responsible for capturing the magical shape they create through a camera lens. It is obvious that capturing a group of ants rushing here and there for a photo is not an easy task. The photographer should be so patient and conscious here. The technique Naicker uses is to take a batch of pictures and select the one that shows the best positioning of the ants without any blurring.
Naicker’s Collections..
Naicker has a collection of different types of animal paintings. In some paintings, we can see only ants. As an example, she has created a Yin and Yang symbol that represents harmony and peace only using ants. However, for some other paintings, she has sprinkled sugar on animal pictures painted on a canvas. She employs real ants to enhance the beauty of the paintings of a baby tiger and a bear. In a few other pictures, ants have filled the antlers of a moose and a rhinoceros.
An artist should have great observation of the behaviour of animals when engaging them in art. These animal paintings showcase Naicker’s expertise in understanding ants’ behaviour. Her vision and planning played a vital role during the entire process of creating these paintings.
