With the intention of introducing a vivid appearance to the usual brick walls in public places, British artist Sophie Mess expertly paints exquisite flower murals on such walls. She chooses large wall spaces in urban cities as the canvas for her art. The outside walls of an apartment building, a cafe and other public places have been colored with her exquisite flower murals.

Although mural arts are available everywhere, Mess’s flower murals are special. Instead of painting a bunch of flowers on the large wall, she depicts only two or one large flower. She locates the flower in the center of the wall so that viewers have to put in extra effort to enjoy the full view of these exquisite flower murals. However, it is worth it to put in that effort because within a “concrete jungle”, it is a blessing to have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and calmness of beautiful flowers such as irises or peonies.

Mess’s intention behind creating these exquisite flower murals is to bring positivity and calmness to urban life by utilizing unused spaces. On the other hand, these large flowers emphasize to people that they actually need to be more concerned about protecting the natural beauty, even within a “concreted” city. As a whole, Mess’s exquisite mural arts are capable of entertaining people with their colorfulness while giving an important message about the unavoidable social responsibility of protecting the natural environment.
