Photographer Raj Mohan recently captured incredible aerial photos of the annual flamingo migration at India’s Pulicat Lake. These photos offer a unique and stunning perspective on the migration, showcasing the vast expanse of the lake and the seemingly endless streams of flamingos that transverse it.

Pulicat Lake is a shallow lagoon located on the border between the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in India. It is home to a variety of birds species, including flamingos, pelicans, and cranes. This place is a popular destination for birdwatchers and photographers as well. Each year, thousands of flamingos flock to Pulicat Lake to feed on the rich supply of brine shrimp and other small organisms that live in the lake’s brackish waters. These flamingos, which are known for their distinctive pink feathers and long, spindly legs, are a sight to behold as they take to the skies in search of their next destination.

One of the most striking aspects of Mohan’s photos is the sheer scale of the migration. Flamingos are social animals, and they often travel in large groups, with some flocks numbering in the ten of thousands. In Mohan’s photos, these flocks appear as a sea of pink, snaking their way across the landscape in a seemingly never-ending stream. In addition, it is an important reminder of the need to protect and conserve these amazing birds due to facing numerous threats including habitat loss, climate change, and pollution. Therefore, it is up to us to ensure that these incredible creatures are able to continue their annual migration for generations to come.
